The Ault Park Concours helped Corvette Celebrate 60 years as an American Icon with a very impressive display of Corvettes. Corvette began life as a one of GM's Motorama Show Cars. 1st shown at the Waldorf Astoria 1953 Motorama, it was an instant hit, orders with deposits were placed at the show. The Corvette was rushed into production for model year 1953 with only 300 units being built. All of them were White with Red interiors. The use of the then "New Material", Fiberglass, for the bodies was suppose to be temporary just to avoid the delays involved with creating new tooling for dyes and stamping metal bodies. Fiberglass worked so well that the decision was made to continue it's use

Engineered and Designed by Zora Arkus-Duntov, the Corvette SS Racer was an experimental Magnesium bodied Corvette weighing a scant 1850 pounds. The SS utilized a tubular space frame chassis with coil over shock front suspension and a de Dion rear axle with inboard mounted aluminum drum brakes. It was powered by a Fuel-Injected small block V8 producing 307 horsepower. The SS was originally produced as a Concept Car with the end goal of competing in the 24 hours of LeMans.

As time passed, GM "Officially" (Wink) was no longer involved with factory backed racing and they began cleaning out their garages and warehouses. Orders were issued to scrap the SS Corvette. Zora was not about to let this happen... rumor has it that Zora had the Corvette shipped to Indianapolis and on May 29th 1967 during the drivers meeting, prior to the 51st running of the Indianapolis 500, Zora presented the SS Corvette to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as a gift. To save face GM took credit for their "Generous Donation"

This years featured Marque is Porsche. From Ferdinand Porsche's humble beginnings in 1948, using the Classic Silhouette that continues today, Porsche has become a World Class Automobile that was "Born to Run and Engineered to Win". A Great display of Porsches shared the Lawn with Historically Significant Corvettes. The Red Porsche 959 shown above was one of only 226 produced. Offered outside the United States in 1988, these cars used Ultra-light weight Kevlar bodies and were capable of 195 MPH. Production was limited and demand was high. Some Buyers were willing to pay close to a Half Million Bucks to claim one
