This Auburn Boattail Speedster replica was completed in the 2008 by
Speedster Motor Cars in Clearwater, Florida, and features fiberglass
coachwork over a custom-made steel-tube chassis. Finished in
tow-tone blue and tan over tan upholstery, the car is powered by
5.3-liter GM Vortec V8 mated to a GM four-speed automatic
transmission. Equipment includes power-assisted four-wheel disc
brakes, independent front suspension, adjustable coilovers all
around, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, 16'' chrome wire
wheels, a tan convertible top, air conditioning, power windows, and
a CD stereo
Clean Florida title that lists the car as a 1936 Auburn. Speedster
Motor Cars was founded by Michael Akins in the 1970s, and in the
early 2000s the company began offering re-creation of the original
851 and 852 Boattail Speedster built by Auburn in 1935 and 1936.
Hand-laid fiberglass bodywork replicates the Speedster's tapered
rear styling, rear-hinged doors, and pontoon fenders, and this
example's coachwork is finished in blue and tan. Chrome wire wheels
are mounted with Mirada Crosstour SLX wide-whitewall tires at each
corner, and power-assisted braking is handled by discs all around.
Additional exterior features include a raked chrome-framed
windshield with triangular wind wings,, cowl-mounted turn signal and
parking lights, simulated external exhaust pipes, a “flying lady”
hood ornament, and a tan soft top that stows under a fiberglass
panel. The cabin houses a contoured bench seat wrapped in tan, with
matching upholstery covering the door panels and color-keyed
carpeting over the floors. Lap belts are are in place for two
occupants, while amenities include power windows, air conditioning,
and a CD stereo with auxiliary input. The carbon-fiber-rimmed
steering wheel sits ahead of a carbon-fiber dash panel housing dual
engine-turned fascias. Stewart-Werner instrumentation includes a
140-mph speedometer and an 8k-rpm tachometer flanked by gauges
monitoring fuel level, voltage, coolant temperature, and oil
pressure. The six-digit odometer shows approximately 1,132 miles.
The fuel-injected 5.3-liter Vortec V8 is cooled via an aluminum
radiator and sends power to the rear wheels via a GM 4L60E
four-speed automatic transmission and a GM 12-bolt rear end.
Carbon-fiber shrouding cover the engine and brake booster, and a
crack along one edge of the engine cover. Suspension incorporates a
double-wishbone independent front setup and a solid rear axle with
adjustable coilovers all around. Steering is handled via a
power-assisted rack-and-pinion assembly. The dual exhaust system
