Certainly one of the iconic cars of the 1930's, the Gordon Buehrig
and Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky designed Auburn Boattail Speedster
continues to be one of the most head turning vehicles to roam our
roadways. Originally an all steel body fitted with a supercharged
Lycoming straight 8 under the hood, they can claim price tags well
into the $800,000 range for pristine original examples. One of the
first to produce a replica of the body in fiberglass form in the
early 1970's would be Elegant Motors, based in Indianapolis,
Indiana. They would offer several configurations of the original
Auburn Speedster, including a 4-seater Phaeton and long wheelbase
version for taller drivers. It was founded by Del Amy and Dick
Passwater, a former stock car racer. They would provide buyers a
full complement of custom options, including Chevrolet Corvette or
Ford powertrains. With sensational reviews from their turnkey
Speedsters for having remarkable authenticity by major publications
like Motor Trend, Playboy, and Car Classics, it lead to more
neo-classic models by Elegant Motors to include a Cord 820 Phaeton,
Shelby Cobra 427, Lamborghini Countach, and legendary Cheetah! The
Auburn 852 Speedster offered here is an extraordinarily authentic
example not easily duplicated for the money!
We are pleased to have this 1981 Auburn 852 Boattail Speedster by

Pontiac 400ci V8 with 4-barrel Quadrajet carburetion and Turbo-Hydramatic
350 3-speed automatic transmission with limited slip rear
differential. Options include air conditioning, power front disc
brakes, power steering, tilt column, cruise control, electric

curtains, upgraded aluminum C&R performance radiator, clutch fan,
Delco HEI ignition, dual exhaust, and period correct The Lester Tire
